Every Salon needs to know their local Trichologist

Who is the first person you would consult with when you notice your has started thinning? Your GP? Your hairdresser or stylist? A family member? In all of these cases, the chances are none of them will know how to help you or in which direction to point you in.

If you speak to your GP about your hair loss, they will most likely tell you that it is just a symptom of growing old. To think hair loss is just a pill we must swallow and move on from can be a damaging outlook. There are 2 FDA-approved medications for hair loss, Minoxidil and Finasteride. While your GP may recommend these to you, they are very unlikely to be able to provide a prescription on the NHS.

Let's say you ask your hairdresser at your next hair cut or colouring. Hairdressers over the years have built a reputation for avoiding conversation about hair loss at all costs. Hair loss isn't a subject they feel comfortable talking about. Hair loss isn't cool, it isn't sexy and therefore its avoided. So when you ask them what are they going to say. Chances are they will suggest styling your hair differently to conceal it or they will tell you that it isn't noticeable and you shouldn't worry about it. They might even suggest a shampoo they sell that they don't know much about, but will tell you it will help. It won't.

This is where a Trichologist steps in. Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair. They are educated to be able to identify and treat the various conditions that can cause hair loss, and in cases where they can't treat they will be able to point you in the right direction. While you may not have heard of a Trichologist, the likelihood is there is one operating in a town or village not too far from you.

Referring your clients to your local trichologist will benefit you in many ways. No longer will you have to skirt awkwardly around the subject of Hair Loss. Your clients will be grateful that you were able to point them in the right direction to start their journey to treat their hair loss. In any industry customer loyalty is an important factor in any decision making. Hair loss is a traumatic experience, and by helping your clients find the solution they need will only increase their loyalty to you.
